Black Sea Coast (Kavarna & Balchik)

Black Sea Coast (Kavarna & Balchik)

Three championship courses on the cliffs above the Black Sea — two by Gary Player, one by Ian Woosnam — all within half an hour of each other.

Bulgaria's golf sits in one place: a stretch of high coastline between Balchik and Kavarna, thirty to sixty kilometres north of Varna. Three championship courses were built here inside five years — Thracian Cliffs and BlackSeaRama by Gary Player, Lighthouse by Ian Woosnam — and they sit close enough together that you can play all three without changing hotel.
What makes it unusual is the ground. The coast rises in limestone cliffs straight out of the sea, and Thracian Cliffs was routed along and down them — holes on ledges, shots played over water, a walk between greens that looks like nowhere else golf normally happens. BlackSeaRama runs along the clifftop with the sea at your shoulder for most of the round. Lighthouse is the gentler of the three, more open and more forgiving, and the one most groups end up enjoying most on day three.
The season is short and worth respecting. May, June and September are the months, warm and dry with the sea breeze doing the cooling. July and August are hotter and busier with beach traffic. From November the coast turns cold and windy — this is not a winter destination the way Türkiye is, and we will not pretend otherwise.
It suits golfers who have already done the Algarve and Belek and want a week their group has not played before. It is not for everyone: the cliffside holes involve real elevation change and a buggy is not optional, and the resorts are self-contained rather than set in a town with an evening of its own. What you get in return is the most photographed golf in Europe, on tee sheets that are rarely full.
