Gloria Golf Club — New Course
Par 72 · 18 Holes · Michel Gayon
The more playable of Gloria's two championship courses — wide pine-lined fairways, a floodlit back nine, and a handicap limit that lets the whole group play.
Why play here
Gloria has two 18-hole courses, and the New Course is the one that gives you room. Michel Gayon opened it in 2005 with wide corridors between the pines and a scorecard that does not try to overpower you: 6,239 metres, par 72.This is a course a 30-handicapper can enjoy and a scratch player still has to think his way around — it held the European Seniors Tour Classic in 2007 and the World Amateur Team Championship in 2012.
The back nine is floodlit. In Belek the sun is down by a quarter past five in December, so on a short winter day you can still play nine holes after it gets dark.
It is the course you book when the four of you do not all play to the same standard and you want everyone to finish the round still enjoying it.
How it plays
The fairways are generous off the tee and the trouble is saved for your second shot. The pines line the holes rather than block them, and the water sits beside greens more often than across driving line.
The greens are Bermuda: firmer and grainier than bentgrass, and slower into the grain than they look. The ball releases on landing instead of stopping on the first bounce, so land it short of the flag and let it run.
Gayon's greens are large and contoured, which means hitting the putting surface is not the same as being close. A long two-putt from the wrong tier is the standard way to drop a shot here.
The one you’ll remember
Hole 17, par 3.
Know before you go
The handicap limit is 36 for men and 40 for women. Bring a certificate or a club card.
Holes 10 to 18 are floodlit, so late tee times are possible. Ask for the floodlit hours when you book — they are seasonal.
Gloria has two 18-hole courses and a 9-hole course sharing one clubhouse, so tee times fill early in spring and autumn. Book the New Course when you book the hotel, not after you arrive.
The greens are Bermuda. The ball runs on landing and putts into the grain are slower than they look.
Three hotels sit on the resort and all of them walk to the first tee. If you stay on site you do not need a transfer to play.
When to play
March to May and late September to November are the two best and the peak season: warm days, firm turf and no heat to work through. June to August is playable, but the middle of the day is hot and early tee times are the only sensible ones.
December to February is also a good season in Belek — mild days, light rain on surfaces that drains fast, quiet fairways and the lowest prices of the year.
